Tar Ponds Samples to be Collected

An excavator will collect sediment samples from the Sydney Tar Ponds on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

The samples will help environmental scientists fine tune treatment technologies planned for the Tar Ponds. Tests on the samples, and air monitoring carried out during the excavation, will provide important information for the environmental assessment that will begin this fall.

The main treatment technology to be used at the Tar Ponds is stabilization and solidification. This involves mixing hardening agents, such as Portland cement powder, with the sediments to bind contaminants in place. Tests on the samples collected Wednesday will help scientists determine the optimal mixture for this process.

Nearby residents may notice some odours during the work, which should be completed in one day.
