Sydney - A workshop hosted by the Cape Breton Partnership on Oct. 31 will bring together more than 100 island companies and organizations that could benefit - directly or indirectly - from the Sydney tar ponds cleanup.

The Uncovering Opportunities workshop at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre will update progress on the cleanup and give companies a clearer understanding on what new opportunities might be available to help their business grow.

"The $400-million tar ponds project has the potential to have a significant impact on the economy of Cape Breton," said Bruce Meloney, president and chief executive officer of the Cape Breton Partnership. "We hope that the agenda for the workshop will demonstrate to participants that most of the labour material, equipment and technical know-how needed for the cleanup is readily available in Cape Breton."

Officials from the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency will lead the discussion. The recently retained final design engineering team charged with overall project design will also be in attendance.
