Activists plan to visit Frederick Street
SYDNEY (CP) - Two high-profile activists will visit a residential area
in Cape Breton many say
is highly contaminated and harmful to people living there.
Maude Barlow, author and national chairwoman of the Council of Canadians,
is scheduled to
tour the Tuesday before giving a public speech at
a local hall.
Elizabeth May, executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada, will also
tour the site and
meet residents of Frederick Street, who say they're suffering from exposure
to several
toxins.
The site was created after decades of unregulated dumping of chemicals
from steel-making.
Raw sewage was also dumped on the site. The tar ponds contain more than
700,000 tonnes
of toxic sludge.
