SYDNEY - Residents of Frederick Street who want to be relocated now
have Halifax lawyer and activist Rocky Jones on their side. Mr. Jones has
been retained by the Sierra Club of Canada on behalf of the residents.
"He has seen the area and he knows what we are up against," said resident
spokeswoman Juanita McKenzie. "He's not afraid of government, and he's
not afraid of controversy."
She said Mr. Jones is delving into a rezoning bylaw passed a number of
years ago that allowed Frederick Street to become inhabited after council
had decided it shouldn't be.
Residents of the area adjacent to the former coke ovens site say high
levels of arsenic and other toxins are making them sick. They plan a
presentation for council Tuesday.
