PETROLIA, ON, Sept. 3 (CNW) - As Ernie Eves strolls into Petrolia this evening he should tell residents in Southwest Ontario why he is allowing untreated toxic sludge to be brought into Ontario.

The toxic sludge from the Domtar Sydney Tar Ponds in Nova Scotia is scheduled to be shipped to Ontario within weeks. "This is untreated toxic waste coming into our community," said Sarnia Liberal MPP Caroline Di Cocco. "Ernie Eves is welcoming this toxic sludge with open arms and he's putting the health of our communities at risk."

Di Cocco challenged Eves to explain to area residents tonight why he is welcoming the toxic sludge into Ontario. "Ernie Eves has turned Ontario into a haven for polluters and untreated toxic waste. He needs to tell us today why he is putting our health at risk," Di Cocco said.

Under Ernie Eves, Ontario is the only jurisdiction in North America to allow untreated toxic waste to be landfilled.

Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario Liberals have a real plan to protect Ontario families from pollution and hazardous waste. "We will make our hazardous waste disposal rules the toughest in North America," said McGuinty. "And we will make absolutely sure the untreated toxic sludge stays away from Ontario."

Di Cocco said local residents have a clear choice in the upcoming election: between Ernie Eves who will welcome toxic sludge and put community health at risk, and Dalton McGuinty who will stop the toxic sludge and protect our community from hazardous waste.

Ernie Eves: You just can't trust him.
