JAG process remains mired in controversy

by Mike McGrath

To the Editor:

We can now mark April 28, 1999 as the official date of discrimination and secrecy starting in the JAG process.

For it was at this meeting that the open, transparent and community minded process excluded steelworkers, behind a secret ballot. This may seem like sour grapes, but not if anyone takes the time to check all the facts.

Checking the facts is an art which has been completely ignored by the JAG Ethics Committee. They allowed themselves to make a recommendation based entirely on lies and false accusations. This was one of the first mistakes made in this comedy of errors called JAG. By failing to verify any of the testimony they heard, they produced a very prejudiced and discriminatory recommendation.

JAG on the other hand, by accepting this ruling, now has lost any credibility because who knows how many other erroneous reports they have received.

Wnen an open and transparent process uses a secret ballot on an issue, then there tends to be serious doubts as to the process and its ability to function as a community-driven process.

The chair of JAG failed miserably when he allowed this to happen. To justify an open and transparent process and then to allow a secret ballot, just doesn't add up.

When we see an article in the Cape Breton Post a few days after this discriminatory action was taken, it is only seen as damage control.

But again the discriminatory JAG process failed to verify the facts because there are still family members that JAG doesn't know about that are still involved. Even the Supreme Court of Canada doesn't include families when it makes a ruling, but the JAG Ethics Committee does.

I have to take my hat off to Bruno's supporters because they stuck with their issue and now control the JAG process. It's going to be interesting to see who is going to be next on their list.

Are the three levels of government going to stay with a process that discriminates?

By the way, does anyone know what happened to the thought of cleaning up the Tar Ponds?
