Sewer collection line design altered to accommodate treatment facility
By Tanya Collier, Cape Breton Post, February 16, 1999
Modifications are being made to the design of a sewer
collection line to accommodate a sewage treatment
facility plant within the regional municipality.
“We are heading towards a sewage treatment facility.
It’s part of the plan,” said Frank Potter, senior
environment engineer with the Cape Breton Regional
Municipality (CBRM). The design for the $8.2 million
Muggah Creek Sewer Interceptor – planned to be
completed by 2000 – will include modifications
necessary for the proposed future phase.
Some of the locations discussed to construct the
treatment facility in Sydney include the railway property
near Ferry Street close to the northern end of Muggah
Creek.
“There is also a fair bit of land at the very end of
Battery Point behind the Esso bulk terminal. We’re
looking at those two sites and trying to make a
decision on which of the two we will be using.”
Potter declined to give a time frame for the proposed
future construction and said the CBRM is now
concentrating efforts on the Muggah Creek Sewer
Interceptor.
“If we get additional funding for another phase including
the treatment plant, then that’s what we’ll be looking
at.”
Potter said the plan for a municipal treatment plant has
been ongoing for 30 years.
“The county constructed the interceptor sewer on the
Westmount side a couple of years ago and there is a
new sewer interceptor that has to be built to
accommodate all of King’s Road and there are a
couple more sections beyond that as well.
