Information meeting attracts a few non-Pier residents

The public perception that contamination in the Muggah Creek Watershed area is unique to Frederick Street still exists, according to one Ashby resident.

Sydney lawyer Joe Rizzetto held a second information meeting Tuesday for homeowners affected by the contamination after a similar meeting last week in Whitney Pier attracted only 30 people.

Only 25 residents, primarily from Whitney Pier, showed up for this week’s session.

Ashby resident Don Deleskie blamed the media and the government for the poor turnout. He said people living in other areas affected by contamination in the watershed feel all the attention is centred on the Frederick Street problem. “I’ve heard residents in the northend of Sydney, in Ashby, say ‘what about me?’,” Deleskie commented.

He encouraged Rizzetto to hold a third meeting – on the other side of the Pier overpass.

“I bet if you had a meeting at the Steelworkers Hall next week you’d be shocked at the turnout.”

Although Rizzetto said he believed the message that the problem is not unique to Frederick Street did get out last week, he agreed to consider holding another meeting in Sydney.
